IFL RECAP WEEK TWO

Week Two of the IFL season is complete, and this young season is already showcasing the parity we’ve come to expect from the Indoor Football League. Two games reached overtime, while three games came down to a difference of a touchdown or less.

Kicking off Week Two of the 2024 IFL season, The Sioux Falls Storm visited the Quad City Steamwheelers. In both team’s season debut, the Steamwheelers walked away Friday night with an overtime victory.

The Storm offense was led by quarterback Billy Hall, who completed eight of 14 passes for 88 yards, and a touchdown, adding a team-high 58 rushing yards and a score. Third-year running back Bryson Denley also found the end zone against a stingy Steamwheelers defense, though the effort wasn’t enough to bring home a victory for the Storm.

Judd Erickson opened the season for Quad City with a strong performance at home, throwing for 169 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Edward Vander found the end zone twice on nine carries for 34 yards.

In overtime, Erickson found the end zone on a two-yard rush followed by a botched extra point attempt, giving the Steamwheelers a six point lead. The Storm were in need of a touchdown and an extra point to walk away with the overtime victory.

Billy Hall led the Sioux Falls offense down the field for an eventual 2nd and goal.  Looking for a dramatic win, Hall fired into the endzone only to be picked off by Trey Smith for the game-sealing interception. The Steamwheelers weather the Storm, winning their home-opener 38-32.

In the second Friday night matchup of Week Two, the Tulsa Oilers and Frisco Fighters faced off in a season-opener for both sides. The Oilers were primed for an early-season road win with a 19-7 halftime lead. Late into the third quarter, Tulsa extended their lead to 15 points, as the score stood 25-10.

With TJ Edwards behind center, you can never count Frisco out.  Edwards reminded everyone why he was voted last season’s league-MVP with a performance2357 reminiscent of 2023.

Through regulation, TJ Edwards gashed Tulsa on the ground, finding the end zone three times. Between Edwards and running back Jimmy Smith, the Tulsa Oilers didn’t have much of an answer for Frisco’s rushing attack. The duo combined for 127 yards on the ground, averaging just over four yards per carry.

Behind two fourth quarter rushing touchdowns from Edwards, the Frisco Fighters fought back to even the score in regulation. Another Friday night matchup was headed to overtime.

Tulsa began the overtime period with possession, though Lionell McConnell flipped momentum to Frisco’s sideline after a crucial interception. Frisco then marched into enemy territory, capping their game-winning drive with TJ Edwards’ fourth rushing touchdown of the night.

The Frisco Fighters open their season with a come-from-behind overtime victory at home against the Tulsa Oilers, 31-25.

Saturday night opened with the Iowa Barnstormers making their season-debut on the road against the 0-1 Green Bay Blizzard. Green Bay lost their Week One matchup to the Pirates and came into Week Two looking to even their record with a win against the Barnstormers.

The first three quarters of this matchup were neck-and-neck. Outside of a field goal for Iowa with six seconds left in the first half, the first 45-minutes went score-for-score.

2358Darius-James Peterson was the main source of offense for Iowa, scoring all three of the Barnstormers’ touchdowns. Peterson ran through the Blizzard offense, carrying the ball 12 times for 73 yards. Rob Washington also added 61 yards on 13 carries.

The Green Bay Blizzard trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter, and it didn’t take long for Max Meylor and the Blizzard offense to take the lead. Meylor found Harry Ballard for a touchdown, giving the Blizzard a four-point cushion. After almost 15 minutes of scoreless football, the Green Bay Blizzard put the Barnstormers on ice with a second Jalyn Cagle touchdown.

Following a back-and-forth matchup, The Green Bay Blizzard even up their record to 1-1 after a 35-24 victory against the Iowa Barnstormers.

In their IFL-debut, the Jacksonville Sharks were hosted by the Massachusetts Pirates in a Week Two matchup. The Pirates were coming off a victory in Week One behind Alejandro Bennifield, earning himself Offensive Player of the Week with his 136 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns.

This was the IFL’s first look at the Jacksonville Sharks, and after their first quarter of play, they led by a touchdown.

Early in the second quarter, however, Alejandro Bennifield started heating up with a 35-yard touchdown strike to Isaac Zico. This would be Bennifield’s first of four passing touchdowns, all of which being hauled in by a different Pirates player.

2360Following a Jimmie Robinson touchdown reception to put the Pirates up 26-14, Conor Blount and the Jacksonville Sharks got back on the board after a scoreless third quarter. The Sharks marched down the field, resulting in a four-yard touchdown pass from Blount to Marquis McClain, bringing the Sharks within a touchdown.

Jacksonville couldn’t stop Jimmie Robinson in the final minutes, however, allowing the Pirates to bleed the final six minutes off the clock and walk out of Week Two with a 26-21 victory. The Pirates enter Week Three as the only team with a 2-0 record, as they’ve had a hot start to the 2024 season.

In another thrilling Week Two matchup, the Vegas Knight Hawks opened their season on the road against the 1-0 Arizona Rattlers in a heavyweight slugfest.

This Week Two matchup featured over 500 yards of offense and over 85 points. Both offenses were firing on all cylinders.

The Knight Hawks and Rattlers went back and forth, trading scores nearly every drive from the second quarter on. Of the 22 total drives, 16 ended with points, leaving only five empty drives the entire game.

This matchup was an offensive battle, and with time expiring, Kevin Macias nailed a 32-yard field goal to give the Vegas Night Hawks a Week Two victory on the road.

Ja’Rome Johnson finished Week Two with one of the strongest offensive performances of the week, totaling 293 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns. Through the air, Johnson went 9/16 with 179 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 116 rushing yards and three more touchdowns on 12 carries.

To wrap up Week Two, the San Diego Strike Force made their way to Rio Rancho, NM, to face off against the Duke City Gladiators in a Monday night battle. Both teams entered Week Two untested with a mutual hunger for a season-opening victory.

2361Gladiators quarterback Javin Kilgo found some success through the air, throwing for two touchdowns against a Strike Force defense that didn’t allow much. Kilgo’s two touchdowns, along with a rushing touchdown from Tasleem Wilson, weren’t enough to combat the turnovers and overall lack of production for the Gladiators.

The San Diego Strike Force’s offense was led by IFL veteran quarterback Nate Davis, as well as running back Travon Van. Davis was tested by the Duke City defense, though, ultimately found enough of a rhythm to earn the Strike Force a win.

Nate Davis ended the night 17/33 for 173 yards and a touchdown pass, while Travon Van was able to find the end zone three times on nine carries for 29 yards.

Stout defensive play was the main story, as both teams hardly allowed either side to establish much of an offensive game plan. San Diego’s defense, however, was the star of the show, allowing just 81 total yards of offense for the Duke City Gladiators and forcing three turnovers— two of which were caused by Kishawn Walker.

In the final matchup of the week, the San Diego Strike Force overcame the Duke City Gladiators, defeating them 32-26.

Week Three features six matchups spread across four days, starting with the Sioux Falls Storm visiting the Massachusetts Pirates on Friday night. That game is scheduled to kickoff at 6:05 p.m. CT. Find this and every game streaming live on YouTube or Caffeine.

TULSA DROPS GAME ONE IN OVERTIME

The Tulsa Oilers opened their 2024 season against the Frisco Fighters on the road, which resulted in a fourth-quarter comeback by the Fighters, ending in a 31-25 overtime victory for Frisco to conclude the first edition of the Red River Rumble.

The Fighters received the opening kick of the game and would find a way to score on their opening drive via a 15-yard rushing touchdown by returning QB T.J. Edwards making it 7-0 Frisco with 10:14 left in the opening quarter. Tulsa responded with a touchdown of their own on the Oilers’ first drive, connecting on a quick handoff to Jonathan Nance who ran for eight yards into the end zone with 4:39 remaining in the first. The extra point attempt was missed making it 7-6 Fighters.

The Oilers grabbed two touchdowns to open the second quarter. Montero Dubose had a 2-yard run into the end zone with 11:48 left in the half. The following two-point conversion was missed, making the score 12-7 Tulsa, and Joshua Crockett snagged a 16-yard reception from new Oilers’ QB Daniel Smith with one hand for his first score of the season giving the Oilers an edge of 19-7 at the end of the second quarter after a converted extra point.

The second half didn’t see points until Frisco’s Bryce Crawford hit a 31-yard field goal to bring the game within nine points at 19-10 with 7:24 left in the third. Alexis Rosario entered the scene in response, grabbing a 10-yard touchdown catch with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter, pushing the game to 25-10 in favor of Tulsa.

The fourth quarter saw two rushing scores from the Fighters’ QB Edwards to help tie the game after a two-point conversion 25-25 with 3:15 left in the game. Tulsa could not stop the clock in the final second of regulation to help set up a field goal to win the game, forcing overtime instead.

Smith would throw an interception in overtime allowing Frisco to have possession. Edwards added one last rushing score for 2-yards to conclude the game and give the Fighters the first taste of the boot trophy awarded to the winner of the Red River Rumble. The final score was 31-25 Frisco making the Oilers 0-1 to start the 2024 season.

Tulsa will head into a bye week, but return for their home opener against Iowa Barnstormers at the BOK Center on April 6, 2024, at 7:05 p.m. CT.

THE STORM FALL TO THE STEAMWHEELERS IN OVERTIME THRILLER

The Sioux Falls Storm Indoor Football team launched the 2024 Indoor Football League season from Moline, IL, on Friday night, taking on the Quad City Steamwheelers to begin their 24th season as an organization.

Andre Fields entered his first game as head coach, leading this new-look Storm team into enemy territory for a tremendous overtime battle between two Eastern Conference rivals. The Storm would fall in overtime 38-32, but there were plenty of big moments and plenty to be excited about for Storm fans.

Coach Fields' roots as a defense-minded coach were apparent early on as the Storm stifled the Steamwheelers' offense on their first possession, resulting in a three-and-out and a missed field goal attempt.

Dajon Emory led the first half defensive charge, finishing with three tackles and two TFL, which tied Claude Davis for the team lead.

Despite the strong defensive effort, Quad City was able to sneak a late first quarter field goal to take a 3-0 lead after a successful field goal attempt from kicker Kyle Kaplan.

The Steamwheelers started the second quarter with a rushing touchdown from Running Back Edwards Vander, who finished with 34 yards and two rushing TD's in his first game with Quad City.

The Steamwheelers offense came knocking again late in the second quarter, threatening to take a 17-0 lead when Storm Defensive Back Cam Harrell picked off a screen pass from Quad City QB Judd Erickson, scoring on the first pick-six of the season for Sioux Falls.

New Storm Kicker Dean Sarris connected on a two-point conversion and the Storm were right back into the game.

Quad City would score on another Vander touchdown in the closing seconds of the half to push the lead out to 17-8 at the intermission.

The Storm made big adjustments at halftime, focusing on getting the ball to Kentrez Bell, the former Strike Force wideout who led the IFL in receiving yards during the 2023 season.

Sioux Falls Quarterback Billy Hall threw his first touchdown pass of the season to Bell on the opening drive of the second half. From there on out, the two offenses were off to the races, with both teams going back and forth in the 3rd quarter exchanging touchdowns.

The Storm capped off the wild quarter with a two-point "deuce" on a kickoff for Dean Sarris late in the quarter to give the Storm their first lead of the season at 24-23.

That lead wouldn't last long though. Fifth year IFL veteran Jarrod Harrington scored his second touchdown of the night on a diving catch at midfield. Harrington would get up and go untouched for a 40 yard score and the Quad City lead.

The Steamwheelers connected on a Deuce of their own on the ensuing kickoff to push the lead out ounce again, this time at 32-24.

The Storm answered with a big offensive blow of their own when Hall made an athletic juke to fake out Steamwheelers defenders and used his speed to race into the endzone for his first rushing touchdown.

A successful Sarris two-point conversion tied the game up at 32-32 with only a 4:00 remaining in regulation.

The Steamwheelers tried to salt the clock away late, setting up a potential game-winning field goal with 0:01 left in regulation, but a fumbled snap foiled their plans and sent the game into overtime.

Quad City got the ball to start the overtime period and scored on an Erickson rushing touchdown, but another fumbled snap on special teams kept it a six-point game.

Sioux Falls had an opportunity to win if they could score a touchdown and successful two-point conversion on their overtime drive. The Storm started with a nice midfield catch from Kentrez Bell.

Two Storm tried to run the ball on first and goal, but Running Back Bryson Denley was stopped for a two-yard loss.

Hall would try to connect with Bell again, this time in the endzone, but was picked off by Steamwheelers defensive back Trey Smith, ending the Storm's incredible comeback effort in a back-and-forth game.

Fumbled snaps were a theme in this wild Indoor Football League thriller. The Sioux Falls Storm finished the night with six botched snaps offensively. The Quad City Steamwheelers delt with a pair of botched snaps on special teams in crucial late game situations.

Hall finished the night going 8-of-15 for 88 yards and a touchdown in his Storm debut. He also ran the ball 14 times for 59 yards (26 net yards) and a score in the loss.

Steamwheelers rookie QB Judd Erickson outdueled Hall, finishing his night 13-for-26 for 169 yards and two passing touchdowns.

Storm wide receiver was the top offensive threat on Friday night, providing the lone receiving touchdown in the loss. Carlos Thompson added three catches for 26 yards in his return to the Storm lineup.

Denley provided a nice second half spark for Sioux Falls, finishing the night with four carries and a key touchdown to spark the comeback attempt.

Harrington finished the night with two catches for 65 yards for Quad City in the overtime win. Vander added a pair of rushing touchdowns to lead the Steamwheelers ground attack.

Defensively, the Sioux Falls Storm were led by Laronji Vason-McCoy and Kendricks Gladney Jr. Both defensive backs finished the night with seven tackles in the loss.

Defensive Linemen Dajon Emory and Claude Davis each had two TFL and Cam Harrell had the lone pick of the night for the Sioux Falls.

The Storm will be back on the road next weekend with a 6:05 PM CT kickoff on March 29th against the Massachusetts Pirates.

PIRATES TOP SHARKS

Alejandro Bennifield got to savor some home cooking.

The Massachusetts quarterback threw four touchdown passes, as the Pirates defeated the Jacksonville Sharks, 26-21, Saturday night in their Tsongas Center debut in front of an enthusiastic opening night crowd of 2,536.

The 2021 United Bowl champions, the Massachusetts Pirates (2-0) are members of the Indoor Football League. After five seasons in Worcester, the team moved to Lowell during the offseason, signing a multi-year agreement at the Tsongas.

“It felt great,” said Bennifield. “First game in the city of Lowell, and we felt great energy. Every touchdown the fans were standing up. They supported us, even when weren’t as great. But we persevered and got that win.”

“Any time you can get that first win at home, first game, it’s history in the building,” said Pirates coach Rod Miller. “It feels great. We made some mistakes we have to clean up, but it still feels great to get the win.”

For fans like Chelmsford’s Ryan Tatara, who showed up dressed in an old school Lowell Lock Monster’s hockey jersey, heading in to see Lowell’s newest pro sports team in his backyard was a no-brainer.

THE KNIGHT HAWKS DEFEAT THE RATTLERS IN WEEK TWO BATTLE

The Rattlers host their first home game against the Vegas Knight Hawks in their new home, Desert Diamond Arena. The Rattlers and Knight Hawks battled in a tightly contested, back-and-forth game. Arizona ultimately fell short, losing to the Knight Hawks by a final score of 45-43.

First Half

The Arizona Rattlers took possession of the ball at the beginning of the game. However, during their first return, a penalty flag was thrown for holding by Vegas player number 12. This led to the ball being returned, despite the initial excitement of what seemed like a touchdown by the Rattlers with just a few seconds from the start.

The Rattlers managed to score a touchdown on their first drive, thanks to a 20-yard pass from Garrett Kettle to Isaiah Huston. The momentum continued as Kettle handed off the ball to Jamal Miles for another touchdown. The team was off to a strong start in the game.

As the game progressed, the Rattlers found themselves in the red zone but had to settle for a field goal after three unsuccessful attempts. However, they did not let this setback deter them, and with just 31 seconds left in the second quarter, they were able to recover a fumble on their own 15-yard line.

The first half ended with the Rattlers opting for another field goal, showcasing their ability to capitalize on opportunities even in challenging situations. The team's strategic plays and determination were evident throughout the game, setting the tone for an exciting match ahead.

SECOND HALF

At the beginning of the quarter, the Rattlers' defensive linemen tackled the Knight Hawks QB for a second down. Lorenzo Brown, who was making his first game debut, started off the Rattlers' possession for the quarter. Despite being sacked initially, Brown handed the ball to Miles, who scored a touchdown. Evitts successfully kicked the ball, putting the Rattlers ahead by 7 points.

With 8 minutes and 41 seconds remaining in the quarter, the Rattlers led 30-23. The Knight Hawks managed to score a touchdown on a QB rush but missed the extra point, resulting in a score of 29-30. Brown completed a pass to Glen Gibbons Jr for a first down. Shannon Brooks carried the ball on the third down and scored a touchdown. Evitts' kick was successful, adding another 7 points to the Rattlers' score. Vegas managed to score twice, but their attempt at a 2-point conversion on the second touchdown was unsuccessful due to Dillion Winfrey's QB sack. At the end of the third quarter, the Rattlers were still leading with a score of 37-35.

In the fourth quarter, Vegas took the lead. With 5 minutes remaining, Winfrey blocked a pass intended for a Knight Hawk touchdown. Vegas then attempted a field goal but missed completely. With the 1-minute warning, the Rattlers were still trailing by 5 points. Brown attempted a pass to Glen Gibbons Jr, but it was incomplete. However, a flag was thrown on the play for roughing the passer-by the Knight Hawks' defense. With 53 seconds left in the game, Brown passed to Gibbons, who was being covered by one defender, for a comeback touchdown, putting the Rattlers ahead by 1 point with a score of 43-42. With just 10 seconds remaining, Vegas attempted a pass for a first down, but it was incomplete. They pushed for a locked fourth down, but another incomplete pass sealed their fate.

Tri-City Tridents vs Omaha Beef Non-League Opponents / NAL 2024  0 - 74

BEEF BATTLE COBRAS TO STAY UNDEFEATED

In the only TRUE National Arena League game, the Carolina Cobras hosted the Omaha Beef for Military Appreciation Night on Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately fell short to the Omaha Beef 54-43. The Cobras started off strong by receiving an early advantage when kick returner Adam Smith made a massive return and got the offense within 17-yards of a score. Cobra Nation fans were on their feet early, but Omaha's Jordan Barton had his own big return as he made a quick return at their 14-yard line.

In the Cobras home opener, Omaha's Tommy Armstrong was the first to score. However, Cobras quarterback Greg Myers threw a complete pass to Smith for a touchdown, and the Cobras league leading kicker Kevin Didio-Weber knocked down the extra point to put the Cobras in the lead. With 7:49 left in the quarter, Omaha gained a passing touchdown, but another missed extra point put the Beef up 12-7.

Smith, proving to be the Carolina workhorse, gave the Cobras more field advantage from special teams and slid to the 25-yard line. After a tough attempt and failing the 4th down, the ball returned to the Omaha who scored on another drive, but this time kept their kicker on the bench while converting on the 2-point conversion, making up for some missed PATs. Cobras Adam Smith had a quick score, but Carolina still trailed Omaha by a touchdown.

In the second quarter, Carolina quarterback Myers took matters into his own hands and scored a rushing touchdown to tie the game. The Beef attempted to regain the lead, but it backfired with a pick-six giving the Cobras the lead instead. Omaha, looking to bounce back, struggled to punch in a score from the goal line. The Cobras stopped them twice, but Omaha eventually scored with a rushing touchdown from receiver Jordan Barton. With time ticking down, the Cobras tried for one more score but a potential touchdown turned into an interception by Omaha's defensive back Trey Dudley-Giles.

Going into the second half, the Cobras were up by two with a roaring Carolina crowd that proved that they missed Arena Football and were ready for another great season. The first seven minutes were a stalemate with defensives on both sides shutting down any chance of scoring. Out of scoring range, Coach Negron called on his All-NAL Kicker Kevin Didio-Weber who attempted a field goal that was close but no good.

Finally, points started to come in on both sides. The Beef with a score on a turnover, and Cobras receiver James Summers scoring on a somersault touchdown to give the team a 3-point lead proved how hard it was for both teams to manage to score. The Beef answered with another touchdown to put Omaha up by four.

In the fourth quarter, Myers led the Cobras down the field and scored a much-needed score, but the Beef recovered and scored quickly. In an arena football game that began to turn into a heavyweight boxing match, the teams stood in a break the scoreboard 46-35 with the clock at 4:56 left in the game. The hard-fighting Carolina Cobras home team had one last blow to deliver, with a heavy blow delivered by Cobras quarterback Greg Myers with a touchdown pass followed by a two-point conversion. However, the Omaha Beef got the final blow, not as strong with another missed PAT, but strong enough to hold the lead and win the game. The Omaha Beef takes the first win in this heavyweight rivalry 54-43. The Cobras return to the snake pit next week to host the Idaho Horsemen on April 1 at 7:30 pm at Greensboro Coliseum.
