15-year-old arrested after educator shot, killed at Central Florida Fairgrounds

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on Thursday weeks after a fatal shooting at the Central Florida Fairgrounds, according to the Orlando Police Department.

In a release, police said that the teen — identified as Jadon Maxey — faces a charge of second-degree homicide with a firearm.

The shooting happened on March 2, with police receiving calls about shots being fired near the flea market parking lot of the fairgrounds around 10:37 p.m.

Police eventually found a woman — Veronica Ramirez, 35 — who had been shot, the release shows. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Lake County Schools said Ramirez was a teacher assistant in the district.

“We were deeply saddened to hear of this tragedy. Ms. Ramirez was a teacher assistant at Sorrento Elementary. She joined Lake County Schools in 2019. We have grief counselors on campus for any student or staff member who needs their services,” the district said in a statement.

No additional information has been provided at this time, including the nature of Maxey’s suspected involvement in the shooting.

Orlando police released images of Maxey’s arrest on Friday.
