UNCG Softball Secures Series Sweep Over Mercer on Senior Weekend

The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team earned its third series sweep after a 3-2 victory on Sunday against The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Mercer at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

Prior to the game the Spartans recognized their seven seniors, including Maycin Brown, Tori Dalehite, Brooklynn Maxwell, Maddie Spell, Anna White, Jaden Cheek, and Blayke Batten.

UNCG had base runners in each inning of the game and capitalized in the bottom of the third for a 1-0 advantage. Maxwell tallied her second hit of the game in the lead off spot and advanced on a passed ball. Jessie Shipley moved her over on a sacrifice bunt and on Grace Loftin's sacrifice fly to center field, Maxwell scored on an obstruction call at the plate.

The Spartans added two more runs on two hits and one error in the bottom of the fourth for a 3-0 lead. With one out, Brown hammered a 3-2 count out of the park for a solo home run clearing the center field wall. With two outs, White walked and Dalehite doubled to center field to put runners in scoring position. Maxwell then walked to load the bases and on a fielding error, White scored.

With two outs and a runner on first in the top of the sixth, Kassidy Moore homered to left field to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.

The Spartans threatened in the bottom of the frame, but ended up stranding two runners. The Bears were retired three-straight on ground outs in the top of the seventh, as Spell held on for the win.

NOTES

• Maxwell went 3-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and one walk.
• Spell tossed her fifth complete game of the season and 15^th of her career.
• Spell struck out four batters in her 10^th win of the season and 23^rd win of her career.
• Brown hit her fifth home run of the season and 35^th of her career.
• Batten and Dalehite each contributed a hit in the victory.

The Spartans will take the week off as they will close out their regular season schedule with SoCon foe Wofford in Spartanburg, South Carolina from Saturday, May 4 to Sunday, May 5 at the Softball Stadium. Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday's single game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.

This will be the final series before the 2024 SoCon Tournament which will held in Greensboro, North Carolina at the UNCG Softball Stadium from Wednesday, May 8 to Saturday, May 11.
