Anthony Johnson lifts UWF football to win over No. 1 Valdosta State in second-round playoff
NCAA Division II playoff Football returned to Valdosta State University as the University of West Florida Argonauts were taking on the Valdosta State Blazers in Round 2 of the Regionals and Chris Belser was in Valdosta GA with My2two9 keeping our Sports fans #LockedIN.
It was just like a movie to the fans watching the University of West Florida take on Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon. Nothing short of an instant classic.
It all came down to the final 2 minutes of football. But this was the NCAA Division II second-round playoff game and the teams were playing for a chance at a National Title. Down 35-31 with 2:12 left, it was win or go home.
Eleven plays later, Anthony Johnson Jr was in the end zone, diving across the goal line on fourth down to deliver the upset, 38-35, in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs with six seconds to spare.
It was UWF’s first win over Valdosta State in program history, at a time in which the Blazers were ranked No. 1 nationally and aimed to defend a national championship.
It was Johnson’s third touchdown of the game and the second-time the Pace High product provided a lead change in the thriller.
UWF heads to Hickory, NC to take on Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.
