Maria Carla Chicuén: Planning centennial celebration of iconic Freedom Tower

ollege’s executive director of cultural affairs in January 2023, María Carla Chicuén has been pivotal in the celebration of major milestones unique to the college.

This past year, MDC celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Miami Film Festival and the Miami Book Fair, and in 2025 the college will be getting ready for the Centennial of the Freedom Tower.

Besides running MDC’s major festivals, fairs, and cultural institutions like the Museum of Art & Design, Koubek Center and Live Arts, she also works to expand collaborations with partners throughout the community and beyond, while representing the college as an ambassador for cultural affairs and policy in national and international forums.

Ms. Chicuén has brought more than a decade in higher education, cultural programming and international development to this role, having worked across the US, Europe and Latin America. Previously, she was founding executive director of CasaCuba at Florida International University, where she helped secure more than $16 million in awards from private, corporate, and government sources.

As an advocate for education access, she has been active in multiple civic and community organizations, including the Leadership Miami program of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers, and a term member of the Council of Foreign Relations.

Ms. Chicuén holds a master of science in international relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, a bachelor of arts with high honors in history and a certificate in Latin American studies from Harvard. 

Upon graduation, she became an education consultant for the World Bank in Washington, followed by her tenure as an organizational management and strategy development consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank in Central America.

Ms. Chicuén said since dancing salsa as a little girl, she has enormous passion for arts and culture, and a deep commitment to the community along with strong leadership skills, leading to her heading MDC’s cultural affairs department at this pivotal time.

“I am so proud to be part of so many cherished programs that have played a key role in building the rich culture of Miami,” she said.

Ms. Chicuén spoke with Miami Today reporter Abraham Galvan.
