Get the original Star Wars Battlefront 2 and more
The Xbox Games with Gold April 2019 selections are on their way, and it’s going to be a good month for futuristic combat. Technically the original Star Wars Battlefront 2 takes place in the past – a long time ago, in fact – but still, you catch my meaning. The big Xbox One picks this month are Outcast: Second Contact, a remake of the influential 1999 open-world alien adventure, and The Technomancer, a narrative-driven action RPG set on far-future Mars. You can also brush up on your Tom Clancy’s History with a trip back to Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2.
Remember: any games you choose to download during their availability period will remain accessible so long as you have an active Xbox Live Gold membership. And don’t forget that any Xbox 360 games made available through Games With Gold are also backwards compatible with Xbox One, letting you keep everything on one console.
The Technomancer (Xbox One) – Available: April 1 – 30
After a brief dalliance with fantasy tales in Bound By Flame, the studio behind Mars: War Logs returns to the red planet in The Technomancer. You and your party explore a post-apocalyptic society scraping by on the not-quite-terraformed surface of Mars, taking down foes in action RPG combat and making your mark on the world through different dialogue and skill choices. If you think sci-fi has gotten too homogeneous these days you might find The Technomancer’s weird future world of magic and science to be a breath of fresh, semi-habitable air.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 (Xbox One, Xbox 360) – Available: April 1 to 15
First things first: this is the original Star Wars Battlefront 2, as in the one that came out in 2005 for Xbox. It was brought to Xbox 360 as well, and now you can even play it on your Xbox One thanks to backwards compatibility. Whatever your feelings on the new Battlefront games, the original Battlefront 2 is still some of the best Star Wars multiplayer fun you can have. That goes for whether you’re playing through the strategy-light campaign of Galactic Conquest or just stirring up trouble with an ewoks-versus-stormtroopers skirmish.
Outcast: Second Contact (Xbox One) – Available: April 16 – May 15
The remake of a cult classic open-world action game from 1999 pays ample homage to its roots, but you don’t need to have played the original to appreciate Outcast: Second Contact. You’re free to explore a sprawling alien world filled with danger and opportunity, taking on quests from friendly locals or just hopping on a weird ostrich thing and seeing the sights as you please. Your choices and actions will even have a direct impact on the ecosystem of the world. Aside from the graphical updates it’s pretty faithful to the 1999 original, which means you can expect some clunky bits, but nothing too bad.
