Wingate beats Johnson C. Smith 42-6 To Kick Off Season

The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University opened the 2019 football season by hosting Wingate University at the Irwin Belk Complex on Thursday night

Behind 296 yards passing from quarterback Shaw Crocker, Wingate rolled to a 42-6 win over Johnson C. Smith to go 1-0 on the season and Jerry Self Jr was in CHARLOTTE, N.C. with My8four3 keeping our #Sports fans #LockedIN.
Wingate jumped on the score board first as Raquan Simmons scored from six yards out to cap a seven play, 59-yard drive to put the Bulldogs up 7-0 at the 9:39 mark.

The Bulldogs made it 14-0 with 5:34 to play in the first after Shaw Crocker hurled 60-yard pass to Cade McDonald. The score ballooned to 21-0 at the end of the first when Nijrere People rushed in for the TD for 13 yards.

Wingate added 14 more points in the third quarter when Crocker connected with BJ Muckelvene for 57 yards to begin the third quarter. Late in the quarter Kalen Clark rush in the end zone for four yard, making the score 35-0.

Wingate added a touchdown on a pass from Darquez Lee to Kamal Deso from 49 yards out, to make it 42-0.

Late in the fourth, JCSU, didn’t let Wingate go out with a shutout. Damon Rice broke free for 90 yards down the sideline for the lone Golden Bulls score. The PAT attempt was no good with 2:00 minutes remaining to provide the 42-6 final.

Individually for JCSU, Antonio Wallace finished with 81 yards on a 6-for-15 performance while throwing no interception. Wallace also rushed for 13 yards. Janarius Hood was the lead JCSU receiver, as he caught four passes for 61 yards.

Defensively for JCSU,David Francis had nine tackles, including four solo stops.

Wingate starts the season 1-0 and will be at Fayetteville State next Saturday. JCSU is 0-1 and will be at Benedict next Saturday.
