Tropics SC earn berth in UPSL National Final Four with 2-1 win in Savannah Saturday
It’s on to Texas, and the United Premier Soccer League’s national championship tournament for the Tropics SC.
The Tropics scored in each half Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Savannah to topple World Class Premier of Maryland, 2-1, to claim a spot in the league’s Final Four the last weekend in July in Weatherford, Texas.
For the first time all season, the Tropics, now 16-0-0 trailed after Elton Joe converted a penalty kick for WCP in the 11th minute.
But a pretty individual effort by Melvin Boetang in the penalty area resulted in the equalizer in the 25th minute, setting the stage for a dramatic second half goal by the Tropics most prolific duo.
In the 55th minute, the winner came off the foot of Ricardo Diegues who finished off a perfect cross from Victor Parreiras. The pair, who have played together for the last eight years after meeting as players at UT-Brownsville, are the active all-time leading scorers for the Florida Tropics of the Major Arena Soccer League, who will start their fourth season of professional
indoor soccer at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.
“It was a true team effort tonight. Everyone who was on the pitch left everything out there,” said Coach Lucas Teixeira. “Our defense was outstanding, and what can you say about Victor and Ricardo. Melvin gets one of the biggest goals of the entire season for us, and that cross and finish for the game winner was all just perfect. They know each other so well, we shouldn’t be surprised, but it was still a beautiful thing to see.”
With the win, the Tropics advance to the UPSL national finals tournament July 27 and 28 with game times and opponents to be determined.
