It’s Like Whitney Never Left Us
Arriving at the Times Union Center on Saturday, you could feel the energy in the Air. The Near sold out crowd was in downtown Jacksonville Florida to remember one of the biggest forces in Modern Music and Film. The Greatest Love Of All: The Whitney Houston show was in town, and we were center stage.
Growing up in South Florida we first encountered Whitney after she made her action debut in the romantic thriller The Bodyguard (1992). She performed the lead single from the film’s original soundtrack, “I Will Always Love You”, which received the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and became the best-selling single by a woman in music history. The soundtrack received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1994, making Houston the first act to sell more than a million copies of an album within a single week period under Nielsen SoundScan system. And we were HOOKED.
On February 11, 2012, Houston was found dead in her guest room at the Beverly Hilton, in Beverly Hills, California. The coroner’s report showed that she had accidentally drowned in the bathtub, with heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. The Music world would be shocked. The young people were robbed of some great music.
But tonight, its not about death. It’s about the music and tonight we saw Belinda Davids, as Whitney and even Bobby Brown would have had trouble seeing the difference. If you closed your eyes.. you were back in 1992 and the music was GOLDEN.
The Crowd was ELECTRIFIED from the opening note to the closing of “I will Always Love you”. Tears rolled down our face from emotion and note after note resounded around the arena and the crowd was singing on the top of their lungs.
We asked Belinda how it felt playing Whitney and she said, “ Hard. Its was hard because there is no other Whitney.” . I felt like she was an actual doppelganger to Whitney herself.
There were several standing novations throughout the whole show. She even trailed through the audience at one point giving fans the opportunity to really interact with the show. It was truly a magical show and I’m glad she got to bless us with the Legendary Music of Whitney Houston in the best way.
