The Pirates were without quarterback Sean Brackett for Saturday’s matchup, with the MVP candidate still sidelined due to an ankle sprain from the final weeks of the regular season.

Without Brackett, who anchored a Pirates offense that scored on 62 percent of its possessions going into the game, Massachusetts struggled at first to keep up with Columbus, trailing, 22-7, going into halftime.

Saturday’s loss closes out a landmark summer campaign for the Pirates, who entered the postseason with the top seed in the NAL with a record of 11-5. The Lions entered the game with the fourth seed off of an 8-7 record.
