New Unis For A New Season
The Atlanta Gladiators have unveiled their new home and road jerseys to be worn during the 2018-19 season.
“We took this re-design very seriously and wanted to make sure we hit the nail on the head with this new look,” said the designer of the jerseys and Director of Broadcasting and Communications for the team, Chris Treft. “We wanted the design to be unique, original, classic, and modern yet stick somewhat to tradition all at the same time which made the process strenuous. With help from former owner Toby Jeffreys and President Scott Henrichsen, we spent a lot of time sculpting the final product, but I think we produced something that fans can really get behind and wear with pride.”
The new jerseys feature a more classic hockey look using predominately the team’s three main colors; garnet, gold and black. Remaining unchanged are the main chest logo of the Gladiator head and shoulder emblem of a shield in the shape of a ‘G’ with a sword going through it, both of which have been a part of the team’s home and road jerseys for all 15 seasons of the club’s existence in Gwinnett County.
“Although the jerseys have a more traditional hockey feel and a few traditional characteristics, they are also unique and are not just a generic template worn by various teams like you see a lot in minor league sports today,” added Treft. “We wanted this look to be exclusive to us and get the absolute most out of our already strong and established identity. There was nothing wrong with the old look by any means but we felt it was time for an update that goes parallel with all the new and exciting things we are doing as an organization.”
The dark jersey, which has been mainly black in the past, will now feature the main color of garnet. This will be the second time the team will have a garnet jersey as the Glads wore a third uniform with that main color during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. The gold jersey will serve as the team’s ‘white’ jersey and will make the Gladiators the only team in North American pro hockey (NHL, AHL or ECHL) to not have a white jersey as one of their main home and road uniforms. This is the second time the team has worn a gold jersey as the Glads donned a fifth anniversary gold jersey during the 2007-08 season.
“We hear fans talk about how much they liked the garnet and gold thirds from the past and that made it easy to select those as the main colors of the home and road jerseys,” Treft said. “We decided to not have a white jersey for a few reasons. We have a neutral color that can serve as our ‘white’ without conflict, colored jerseys are typically more popular with fans, and we wanted to be different and try something no one in pro hockey really does often. It all just worked well in this situation.”
The team will offer the unique opportunity for fans to vote on and select which jersey the team will wear on specific nights via social media. The home and road jerseys along with the team’s new third jersey, that will be revealed at a later date, will also be worn without predetermined set schedule allowing for fans to see rarer “color-vs.-color” jersey matchups throughout the season. If the fans aren’t picking which jersey the team wears on specific nights, the team will decide which jersey will be the most compelling and entertaining with the opposition’s sweaters.
“I overhear fans saying things like ‘I hope Glads wear these jerseys tonight’ when they are walking in all the time, and now we can give them the ability to be a part of that decision with access to this unique opportunity,” said Team President Scott Henrichsen. “We know change can be difficult sometimes, but whether it’s with our new jerseys, in-game experiences or anything else we offer, we are going to do our best to use every avenue we can to try new things to see what is going to make this product the best it possibly can be for our fans. We know how important uniforms are to fans, so why not try and get the most out of them as we can?”
The jerseys are available for purchase exclusively to full season ticket holders immediately. This pre-sale just for season ticket holders will run until the preseason inner-squad game on Sunday, October 7th at the Duluth Ice Forum where they can attend and pick up their jerseys in person. The garnet and gold jerseys will go on sale to the public at the preseason inner-squad game and then online or in the front office the next day on Monday, October 8th.
